If you are working, living or a qualified dependent in Alberta, then you can start the process of your Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) claim procedure. You have 365 days or a year to file your claim for the cost of health services covered.
There are two ways to do your AHCIP claim procedure. First is to prepare all the necessary documents then submit them to their office or an authorized registry agent. Second is to prepare the documents and mail them to their office.
1. Preparing Your Documents
Make sure you have all the pertinent documents and their copies. These include all receipts, hospital billing statements, etc. Next is to download and print the claim form from their website. You can also get the form from the AHCIP office or an authorized registry agent (the hospital, your doctor’s office, a pharmacy or a drug store).
After filling up the form, mail it along with the original copies of your supporting documents or submit them through the office or an authorized registry agent.
Make sure that the documents are on the letterhead or official statement of the hospital and physician that provided the service. If the original document is in a foreign language, it must be translated to English.
Depending on how fast the hospital and healthcare providers process your request for the official documents, this part should be done in one day.
2. Submitting Your AHCIP Claim
As mentioned, you need some specific information in order process your claim.
a. Hospital service information – You need to provide the name and address of the hospital, the dates of admission and discharge of the insured patient, the CPT billing codes and diagnosis, the description of the treatment, procedure or surgery done, the nature and number of diagnostic tests done, as well as your proof of payment and amount being claimed.
b. Physician service information – You need to provide almost the same information: name and specialty of the healthcare professional, the CPT billing codes and diagnosis, the description of the treatment, procedure or surgery done, the date/s when the insured patient was treated, as well as your proof of payment and amount being claimed.
You can submit your claim the day that you complete your documents, but if not, you can mail them the following day or pay a visit to the AHCIP office or an authorized registry agent. Preparing and submitting your insurance claim will take, at most, two days.
3. Waiting Time
After successfully submitting your documents, it will usually take 8-10 weeks to process your AHCIP claim.
