There are many myths and misinformation out there on the extent of Alberta’s health coverage for physio, which is why we’ve crafted this neat guide for you to follow so you can make the right decision regarding your treatment.
First and foremost: YES, it is possible to get free physiotherapy through your regular Alberta Health Services Coverage, but you must make sure that physiotherapy is covered first.
The problem is that the province has set a funding cap on physiotherapy clinics which means that any new patients will most likely have to be placed on a waiting list.
The Alberta Health Services will usually provide coverage for the following conditions:
- Injury resulting in fracture
- Post-surgery physio treatment
- If you fall in the ‘low income’ classification
Please be aware that only clinics that have a contract may actually provide coverage by the Alberta Health Services. If the clinic of your choice has no contract with the AHS, your treatment fees are not covered and you will have to pay out of pocket.
Alternatively, you may also be able to contact the AHS offices to determine which clinics are covered and then decide where to undergo treatment for your conditions.
There is also the Extended Benefits Providers which cover massages, physical therapy and acupuncture. Please note that the degree of coverage varies for each company and that that it is best to contact your EBP to understand the full extend of coverage eligibility. Some EBPs may even require a doctor’s prescription in order for your visit to be eligible for reimbursement.
